The Incredible Shrinking Man
Philippians 2:5-8
“The Incredible Shrinking Man” by Richard Matheson is about a man who is gradually shrinking. Everyday he gets a little smaller. The book is a fun read but there is something that lurks in my heart about it. Despite what the critics claim about pent up frustration or the attempts of a man trying to find his place in the world. As the novel progresses and the floor gets closer, we wonder if he will survive at the end of the novel.
Humility brings us down to the floor. The more we lower ourselves, the more we come to understand there is more to go. When there are situations and we humble ourselves in the midst of those situations and allow ourselves a moment of clarity, we see that this is the true response of the Christian.
Our attempts at lying and trying to defend our honor are vain, we need to humble ourselves and shrink ourselves as close to the floor as possible. The critics will claim that we are trying to deal with frustration or something else is going on.
At the end of Matheson’s novel, we find the main character doesn’t disappear into nothingness but is able to view the entire sub particle world. The more we shrink and humble – the more we find there is to go in the way of humility.
